Hi, I'm Lawrence Tijjani, founder of Just a Guy CIC, a social enterprise dedicated to helping young people reach their full potential through mentoring and workshops. I started Just a Guy CIC after suffering a severe epileptic attack 10 years ago, which left me needing to relearn how to walk. Now, I battle chronic pain daily while running two businesses and raising my amazing son.
Read Time: 4 minutes Happy Sunday 👋🏾, Today’s newsletter is a little reminder about the work I do and why I do it. When I meet people and tell them what I do, the most common question I get is: "How do you manage everything?" For those of you who don’t know, I run a professional development EdTech company called Happy2Host Education and a non-profit called JustAGuy CIC. What’s even crazier is that I launched both businesses just a year apart. Yes, you read that right—both were formally started within a year of each other. I know, who does that? Well, apparently, I do! Juggling both businesses is definitely a challenge. I won’t lie—it can be tough at times—but it's completely worth it. So, let me tell you how JustAGuy came to be. It wasn’t something I had planned for. Life just happened. Many of you know that around 10 years ago, I suffered a severe epileptic attack. This experience led me to start a blog called Just a Guy Trying to Make It. I used that space to document my journey to recovery—talking about my progress, the highs, the lows, and everything in between. The blog started gaining traction, and before I knew it, I was being invited to speak at events. Then, schools and colleges began reaching out, asking me to come in and talk to their students. It wasn’t long before I realised this was something I wanted to do more of. After leaving teaching, I continued giving talks here and there. But honestly, the impact felt fleeting because I was only there for 45 minutes at a time, and then I was off to the next thing. I knew there had to be a way to make a more lasting difference. That’s when I started thinking: How can I keep working with young people and make a real impact? And that’s how JustAGuy CIC was born. I thought back to some of the things that made an impact on my life—mentoring and having a network I could get advice from—and I wanted to make sure other young people had access to those same resources. The idea of helping young people, especially those from underserved communities, to realise their potential really drives me. It brings me a sense of fulfilment and feeds my soul. Now, I’m not claiming that I’m out here changing the world overnight. But, when you offer a bit of advice, mentorship, or even just a simple act of kindness, you never know what ripple effect it can have on someone’s life. Sometimes you see the impact straight away, other times it takes years. Paying It Forward So, why do I do what I do? It all comes down to giving back—especially to young people. There’s something incredibly powerful about investing in the next generation. You never know where that ripple effect might lead. If you can, consider paying it forward by mentoring a young person, volunteering your time to work with youth, or even connecting someone to an opportunity they might not have otherwise had. The smallest action can make the biggest difference. Get Involved with JustAGuy CIC If you’re looking for a way to make a difference, we’d love to have you get involved with JustAGuy CIC. Whether you’re interested in volunteering, offering support, or even just spreading the word, there’s always a way you can help. We’re all about creating opportunities for young people who might not otherwise have access to them, and the more hands we have on deck, the more we can do. If this sounds like something you’d love to be a part of, feel free to reach out to me! We’re always looking for passionate people who want to make a positive impact. Upcoming Event: Sutton, Tuesday 1st October And if you’re based in or around Sutton, we’ve got something really exciting coming up! On Tuesday 1st of October, we’ll be launching our new partnership with Oru in Sutton, and this one is especially close to my heart because it’s my local community. You can sign up here.
