Hi, I'm Lawrence Tijjani, founder of Just a Guy CIC, a social enterprise dedicated to helping young people reach their full potential through mentoring and workshops. I started Just a Guy CIC after suffering a severe epileptic attack 10 years ago, which left me needing to relearn how to walk. Now, I battle chronic pain daily while running two businesses and raising my amazing son.
Read Time: 2 minutes Happy Sunday šš¾, Every week, I have a check-in call with a close friend. We call it our accountability hour. This week, he dropped a line that felt like a double slap to the face (in the best way): āYou know what you need to do. You just donāt want to do it.ā It wasnāt rude. Iād been saying how things werenāt quite moving in the business ā like I was doing a lot but not actually going anywhere. That sentence made me stop in my tracks. Then he followed it up with: āAre you doing the boring, unsexy things that actually move the business forward?ā CHAI! I was thinking in my head, he is not playing today! Because the truth is... I wasnāt. Stuff like writing sales funnels. It doesnāt feel urgent. You know what the hardest thing I have to do every morning is? Brushing my sonās teeth. Stick with me here ā it does relate to what weāre talking about š Heās two. Because that boring routine ā that daily battle with a wriggly toddler ā is what sets him up to have healthy teeth. Teeth that donāt hurt, donāt go yellow, and donāt fall out. The point is: boring things build solid foundations. In parenting. You canāt go to the gym once and expect to be in shape. Thatās what Iād let slide. I used to block out time each week to do the boring-but-necessary work that keeps things growing. But Iād fallen out of the habit. That conversation with my friend brought it back. I blocked the time. And surprise, surprise... things started moving again. So Iāll ask you what he asked me: ā āAre you doing the boring, unsexy things that move things forward? If not, this is your reminder to start. Discipline is doing what needs to be done, even if you donāt feel like doing it. Have a great week! If someone forwarded this to you, Subscribe here. |
